All About Tiffany Style Lamps

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
1.jpgMany people who do not know much about 2.jpgTiffany lamps do not understand why they have such fascination with so many collectors and interior designers.  One of the biggest reasons for the fascination is that each lamp was made by hand by a skilled artisans and unlike so many which are mass produced for a product that is like thousands of others.

Louis Tiffany, along with others in his glass studio used discarded pieces of glass from the process of making stained glass panels to create some beautiful pieces.  From these small pieces Tiffany was able to create the gorgeous Tiffany table lamps, and Tiffany floor lamps which are now such major collectible items that can be seen at extremely high prices in auction houses whenever they go on sale.

4.jpgToday there is still a thriving market for stained glass lamps.  These lamps are still made by hand and sold using the patterns and designs that Tiffany created during his career.  Browse our extensive collection of Tiffany style Lamps online.  All products are made in the U.S.A.

Many customers come to me saying they hear that incandescent bulbs are going away. That is a partially true statement. The truth behind the matter is that the Energy Independence and Security Act that President Bush signed in 2007 does not ban incandescent lamps. Instead it sets efficiency standards that manufacturers must meet by specified dates. The true part is that some existing models of incandescent bulbs fail to meet the standards will be phased out beginning in 2012.

The general service light bulbs that will be phased out are your basic medium base screw in bulbs, in a clear, frost, or soft white finish. The law provides for a 3 year phase out that will start with the 100 watt bulb in 2011 in California and follow in 2012 with the other 49 states. The 75 watt bulbs will go in year 2013, 60 and 40 watts will go in 2014.

The law provides strong incentives for companies to market more efficient incandescent, or bulbs with similar technology to the old ones. For an example, halogen bulbs are way more efficient than the regular incandescent 60 or 100 watt incandescent. Unlike the fluorescents they DO NOT contain mercury, they screw in easily, are dimmable, and they light up right away to full capacity. Compact fluorescents are the other option as well as LED bulbs. So while some of our popular incandescent bulbs will be getting phased out, there are tons of options out there and technology is also advancing each day.

Choosing the best Table or Floor Reading Light

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

With the weather getting colder and colder you are spending more and more time indoors.  What is better on a frosty cold night than sitting in a nice warm house with a cup of hot choclate and a great book.  Well that is one of my favorite things to do.

Most people do not realize without the proper light they put alot of strain on their eyes.   Research concludes that we need only half the light at age 30 to have adequate reading illumintaion as compared to what we need at age 60 to read the same material. Age 40 seems to be the age of the beginning of diminishing eyesight.  The older we get the more we are prone to eyestarin, blurring vision, and headaches as a result of inadequate lighting while reading.

Research also shows that the reduction in retinal illuminance as we age requires a light level of more than 100 footcandle for optimal reading performance.  A 75-100 watt Osram Halogen bulb, as well as the shap and construction of the inside reflector will generate over 100 footcandles.

Also a matte glass diffuser and a reflector that focuses the light only on the reading material will reduce glare and scattering.  See our contemporary floor and table lamps that are specially designed for reading and eye strain reduction.

Helping Educate Our Future Designers

IMG_0057.jpg IMG_0058.jpg IMG_0065.jpg In the contemporary world of business, the Interior designer plays an integral part in projecting the corporate image to the public.  We at Grand Light work very closely with our interior designers to ensure complete customer satisfaction.  With in the last week we brought into our showroom a class of future designers from Paier College not only for a tour but for an overall education on all the types and forms of lighting.  We believe it is very imporatant to help educate our future designers to understand the importance of lighting.  We also gave the students a tour of our restoration facility and showed them how to restore an old light fixture to completley new.

All About Bathroom Lighting

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
bath.jpgBathroom Lighting seems to be one of the least important rooms people consider when it comes to lighting.  However, Lighting is extremely important in the bathroom for purposes such as shaving, makeup, showering, and creating a mood for the room.

Vanity lighitng should be your top priority since these fixtures work the hardest to illuminate the head and face for grooming.  The most common mistake people make is putting recessed lighting directly over the mirror.  These cast shadows on the face, which make daily grooming rituals difficult.  I have had so many customers ask "me what is the best place to place your bathroom light?"  Vertical fixtures or sconces mounted on either side of the mirror are the best for casting even light across the face.  To eliminate shadows under the chin, eyes, and cheeks, fixtures should be mounted on either side  36" to 40" apart.  The center of the fixture should be roughly at eye level about 66" off the floor.
Given the size and positioning of some vanity mirrors, sidelights can be impractical.  In this case I would use a bath light over the mirror.  It should be placed 75 to 80 inches above the floor.  You will want to face the light down so it washes evenly over the hair and face.

The shower is the next important part of the bathroom that needs light.  If it is a small bathroom with a clear door then a light is not necessary.  However for larger bathrooms with shower curtains it is highly suggested to install a recessed light with a water proof shower lens
To add some ambient light a surface mounted fixture is installed usually in the center of the room.  This can also be replaced with an exhaust fan/light
