Finding the correct size outdoor lantern can sometimes be a challenge.  Here are some tips to take into consideration when you are looking to do your outdoor lights.
The height of an outdoor light should be based on the height of the door.  Do not under size your Light remember as a rule of thumb your light should always appear to be about half the size of your door from 50' away.

If you are installing only one lantern on the side of the door, it should measure one-third the height of the door.  The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.


When you use two lanterns on each side of the door, they should measure about one-fourth the height of the door.  The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.

Q: How do I determine the proper size chandelier for my dining table?
A: Typically the rule is to choose a chandelier with a diameter equal to 1/2 the width of your table.  For example if your table is 48" diameter then choose a chandelier that is no more than 24" in diameter.

A: The chandelier should hang so that the bottom of the fixture is 30" to 32" above the table top.

Q: What is the proper height to install wall sconces?
A: Sconces should be installed on the wall 60" from the floor.

In the bathroom, you need plenty of even, shadow-free lighting for shaving, and applying makeup.  Typically in smaller bathrooms lights over the mirror will light the entire room.  Larger rooms generally need an additional fixture. 

For small mirrors a decorative wall light on each side will illuminate both sides of your face evenly. 

Generally the size of the light should be 3/4 the size of the mirror.

Most vanity lights can be installed up or down.  Installing the light facing down ward will provide better lighting than installing the lights facing upward.

Under cabinet lights offer both task and accent lighting.  When placed under kitchen cabinets they provide light to illuminate the counter top, which will help with tasks such as cutting vegetables.  Generally if someone wants to show off a prize they will place them in a display cabinet.  They are good to use in workshops or anywhere that you need light at hand.   Under cabinet lights are available in many forms and styles.  They are also offered in many different light sources such as Xenon, halogen, fluorescent, and led.

It is essential to utilize different types of light for different areas.  Just because you have found that perfect light you dreamed of doesn't mean it will solve any lighting issues you may have.  For instance in the kitchen the light that is used for safety at night, or preparing food is not the same type of light you would use for gatherings and entertaining.  The light you use to read would not be used as general light for a room.  These are some factors that need to be taking into consideration when designing a room.  When you do you will use three types of light, General, Accent, and Task lighting.  For instance in a kitchen you have general lighting through recessed lights and ceiling lights.  Your task lighting will come from under cabinet lights.  These lights help with the task of preparing food.  Finally some ambient light would be used to accent china cabinets, glass cabinets, etc.  With these three different types of light your kitchen atmosphere is complete. 

A dinette is typically a smaller eating area.  Many people typically use a small chandelier "Chadelette" with a downlight to provide light onto the surface.  A single decorative pendant about 12"- 16" in size will also do the job. Another idea for a chandelier look is a 3 Light downlight chandelier, which will provide plenty of light, and is a good use for children to do homework under, hobbies, bills, etc.  You can install a dimmer switch to provide ambient light when eating.
